You don’t ask the name server address to anybody. When
you type the address cnn.com and click enter, domain name resolution process
starts in the background and ultimately presents your browser with the IP
address of the CNN.com’s web server.
Browser contacts the IP directly and
gets the home page of the site in question for you. Hence it does not matter
to you how this thing happen.
However remember that we are discussing the main
components about it all works in harmony. Understand that DNS carries out a
very important function of the Internet.
13 root servers.
One important component of the DNS server’s hierarchy
we mentioned previously while talking about the Internet DNS servers is root
servers. There are 13 root servers placed across the globe which create the
backbone of the DNS. 13 servers are deployed so that even if 10 fails due to
an attack or for other reasons, there are others which can stand running to
handle the most basic requests in the domain resolution process.
Other name servers consult a root server when they have
no information about a particular domain name or its authoritative server.
What happens when you are accessing a web page.
When you are visiting a web site you are likely to be
using thousands of kilometers of network cabling, equipment, you are passing
through several large routers, you are likely to be utilizing the services
of several DNS servers to match the name and finally you get to the page in
question.
Only all this, which is technically highly complex,
happens in a few seconds and without presenting any of its complexity to you
the user.
