During childhood days, I had dreamt of hailstone showering. Many children like me might have waited hailstone in the time of heavy downpour and roaring wind.
That dream developed through elder’s stories of hailstone showers. Hail stone appeared as a mysterious thing in bed time stories.
Many days in the heavy monsoon, I waited impatiently for the dream hails. But it didn’t come. Even the rainbows and rainstorms have come across in between; the “frozen gift” was not there. When the storm cloud appeared in the blue sky, I had longed for the hail as pied hornbill waiting for rain.
Each and every rainy day, I would simply dream for this cold stones. But the dream didn’t bear fruit. Still, my mind would tell me. “One day the heavenly hail would come to you and that would make you rejoice. The gift of the sky would excite you for ever. That would lead you to new heights of imagination.”
Surprisingly, I got the hail here in my hands, not in the land of monsoon wonders, Kerala. I got it here in the desert land, Qatar with very rare downpours. One afternoon, last week, we heard the downpour with loud sound. When left out, it was there the silver frozen pellets in my dream. When taking the small cold hails in my palm, it was a dream come true for me.
It was seen all the young and old assembled there filled with rejoice to touch the pellets. It was a blessing from above; a loving gift of rain God. It sparkled, when the sunrays entered through its transparent, tiny body. Even it melted within seconds; the contentment of the experience will remain for ever. Hail stone showering is an exciting symbol; it is a small wonder of Nature. There was a special kind of attraction to this downpour while it came at the end of winter. This is the time desert wind is moving fast to the mood of spring.
Here one has to pray for a downpour for long time. Once or twice in a year, the rain God favors this land. So hails’ rhythmic fall made a particular mood in this desert. Monsoon rain and its beats are nostalgic element of Keralites, staying outside. The hail stone too excite them greatly.
