The recent Thattekad Bird Sanctuary Boat tragedy has some parallels in the history of cruising in Kerala. Many of them were caused by irresponsibility and inefficiency which could have been avoided if some people had valued human lives more than Money. But unfortunately it is the opposite that happen often.
1924 January 16, the boat ‘Redeemer’ literally redeemed over 24 lives in Kollam district. The victims of this tragedy included the one and only “Kumaranazan” (noted Malayalam poet). |

1985 July 21, the tragedy killed 135 estate workers at the Malampuzha Dam. |

1980 March 19, over 29 were killed in the tragedy at ‘Kallancheri River’, the victims were returning from a religious ritual held in behalf of the blessed father Joseph at ‘Kannamali’. |

1983 September 23, over 18 wee killed at the tragedy at ‘Vallarpadam’ the victims were returning from the annual festival of Cochin Vallarpadam Church. |

1990 December, over 7 including 3 women and children were killed when a boat drowned at ‘Peppara’ dam. |

1998 may, about 6 young men were killed when a boats that cruised the ‘Alluvamanapuram’ drowned. |

2002 July 27, about 29 were killed at the ‘Kumarakam boat tragedy’, the tragedy was inevitable as the boat carried double the load of what it actually was capable of carrying the victims were on their way to attend PSC exam (public service commission). |
