In 1934, as part of a trip to Malabar for Harijan Fund Raising, Mahathma Gandhiji visited Vatakara. Sitting in Vatakara Kottapparambu near today’s old bus stand, Gandhiji spoke the following wearing his genuine humour.
Generations to come, it may be, will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth …… Albert Einstein
Gandhiji spoke,
“Today I have arrived here late. However, whether I arrived late or you had waited for me for long, it’s all right. But God will not wait for you and me. Harijans must not be treated bad just because they are born of a low cast”.
“God has allowed us some more time to rectify this discrimination and treat them with love and respect. Within that time we must carry-out our obligations. If we do not do so, before we destroy the discrimination over cast, it will destroy us.
“Let the God give us strength to cross the fire trial unscathed.”
In the meeting Gandhiji requested donation to the Harijan Fund. Audience moved. Within minutes one girl offered all her ornaments to the great Leader. This was kaumudi. The Kaumudi incident got national fame and was aired on Radio.

“Wise people reflect before they speak.
Fools speak first and then reflect on what they said.”
