Building on your own?

It depends up on your planned site and it also depends upon your calibre. If you can handle an HTML editor like Microsoft Frontpage or dreamweaver from Macromedia you may be able to develop even a large sized mostly static pages website with out many problems.

What does HTML editors do?

Web pages are fundamentally HTML or Hyper Text Markup Language pages. This is a kind of page which contains tags of HTML besides your data. Everything in a web page is managed and produced in the manner you see it, using these tags. Beauty of HTML editors like Frontpage or Macromedia is that they let you create web pages without knowing any HTML. There is no harm in knowing HTML and it obviously helps, however if you are asking whether it is needed to know HTML, to build a site, the answer is no!

Do you have to be a programmer?

Remember that if you do not know asp or php programming and have no knowledge of HTML you may not be able to do even simple programming for the site. However if your site does not require it, then it is not a worry.

There are many professionals who makeup the site / web building profession. The important main specializations are as following.

1. Web designer – who is responsible for the look of the site, graphics etc..

2. Developer – who is responsible for programming, database related development etc..

3. Content developer – who may be responsible for the content building, copywriting etc..

There can be many other professionals who are related to large site building.

However when you are your own, you are all experts rolled into one. It is possible to develop even a large site this way. However, when you are not good in a certain area it can show up in the quality of the site.

What about Graphics expertise?

Graphics is manipulating, presenting and improving the graphics experience of your web visitor. If your graphics involves posting some photos and doing simple cropping and other minimal functions, you don’t need to be an expert or require to know sophisticated programs like adobes Photshop. HTML editors like FrontPage let you insert and do simple picture management.

Outsourcing.

When you outsource building sites, lot of problems gets solved straight away. Approach a good designer firm. However the content building may be mostly your job since the designer firm is unlikely to be expert in your area of business.

Building the site yourself. – things to consider.
