Bhanthia case posted for Jan 3
KOZHIKODE: The judicial first class magistrate court recorded the statement of T R Narayanan, deputy general manager and power of attorney holder of Nedungadi Bank Limited, in the second criminal case he filed against bank’s former director Rajendra Kumar Bhanthia and two others in connection with the share scam in the NBL. Magistrate P S Ananthakrishnan posted the case for January 3. Another criminal case filed earlier against Bhanthia (of the First Custodian Fund – India) and two others was also posted for the same day for further proceedings. Advocate P V Hari appeared for the NBL. The second case was filed against Bhanthia, share-broker Srikant G Mantri and the Harvest Deal Securities Limited, a share-trading firm in which R K Bhanthia is the chairman.

National mental retardation meet on Dec 29
KOZHIKODE: National mental retardation meet will be held from December 29 to 31 in Kozhikode. The meet is jointly organised under the joint auspices of the Association for Welfare of the Handicapped (AWH) and the National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH). About 30 papers will be presented at the conference being held for the second time in the state, said AWH project director C Abdul Aziz. About 400 delegates from the country and abroad will attend, organisers told a news conference.

Dr Rajput to open ABVP meet

KOZHIKODE: The first Nadana Devan Award given to young artistes by the Swathi Thirunal Kalakendram was bagged by famous actor and dancer Vineeth. CPI to lay siege to taluk offices on Dec 19
KOZHIKODE: CPI activists will lay siege to all taluk offices from dawn to dusk on December 19 to protest against the apathy of the UDF government in maintaining law and order and solving the crisis in the coir and handloom sectors. The CPI state secretary Veliyam Bhargavan, accused the Chief Minister A K Antony, of maintaining a stoic silence to the inept attitude of the police force to act against the criminals. He also alleged that the chief minister was remaining a mute spectator to mafia groups and sex racketeers operating in the state.
Lawyers to boycott courts on Dec 18
KOZHIKODE: Lawyers all over the state following the decision of the members of the Bar Council of India and chairpersons of state bar councils at a joint meeting held on November 24 in New Delhi will boycott courts on December 18 as a protest against the anti people law. Parippalli Raveendran, member Bar Council of India and Vinod Singh Cheriyan, vice chairman of the Kerala Bar Council averred that though the Union Law Minister Jana Krishnamoorthy had given an undertaking that a dialogue on the proposed amendments would be initiated; lawyers had called off the boycott. Since no move for a dialogue on the issue had been made, the lawyers would go ahead with their protest.

SFI national meet in Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE: The eleventh national meet of SFI will be held from February 12-16, 2003 in Kozhikode. This was announced by all India secretary Samik Lahiri, MP at a press meet. Thousands of representatives are expected to take part in this meet, which would protest against the government’s aim of privatising the educational policy and saffronising it. Referring to the recent police action on the SFI activists in the state, he said that the Antony Government would not be able to suppress students’ agitations by using the police force. KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Book Marketing Society (Book Mark), functioning under the Cultural Department of the government, will organise a book festival at the Indoor Stadium from tomorrow. The organisers told reporters that about 10,000 titles in various genres would be up for sale at attractive discount rates at the festival, being organised as part of the month-long campaign to promote the mother tongue. Literary discussions, apart from a poets’ meet, will be organised during the afternoons, they said.

300 students to take part in Balasangamam
KOZHIKODE: A reception panel has been formed for making the Balasangamam a success in Kozhikode. The function organised by Kudumbasree will be held on December 23-27. Mayor Thottathil Raveendran has been selected as the chairman and other twelve sub panels have also been formed. Three hundred students from different parts of the state are expected to participate in the Balasangamam. The students coming below poverty line will be accommodated in their friend’s houses in Kozhikode. Students from sixth to ninth standards will take part in the sangamam. The main agendas of the Balasangamam are environment, study, city and forests.
Malabar Mahotsav from Jan 29
KOZHIKODE: Malabar Mahotsav, the annual cultural festival of Kozhikode, will be held at different venues from January 29 to February 1.
Tabla exponent Rimba Siva will perform at Stadium Ground, the main venue of the festival, on the inaugural day. Singers M G Sreekumar and Radhika Tilak will provide a musical feast on the second day at the same venue. Pop singer Sudhesh Bosle will sing on January 31. Gazal artiste Pankaj Udhas will perform on February 1. K J Yesudas and S Janaki will perform at the main venue on the concluding day.
Carnatic musicians N Ramani, P Unnikrishnan, Malladi brothers, Gayathri and Rajani will perform at different venues as part of the festival. Balakondal Rao, Narendra, Mahalakshmi, Kala Vijayan and Ganga Thampi will dance at various venues during the festival. A drama competition, folk art festival and a food festival also form part of the four-day festival. District Collector T O Sooraj presided over the meeting. Mayor Thottathil Raveendran, Deputy Mayor P T Abdul Latheef and ADM P S Mohammed Sageer also addressed the meeting.

JRF coaching for minorities on Dec 16
KOZHIKODE: Coaching class for minorities to the UGC-JRF/lectureship examination conducted by the Calicut University will begin on December 16. KOZHIKODE: The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, is organising its third annual management festival, Backwaters 2002, from November 29 to December 1. 2500 candidates appear for CAT exam
KOZHIKODE: The Common Admission Test (CAT) for the high profile post graduate Programme in Management conducted by the six Indian Institutes of Management was conducted by the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) along with other IIMS. This is for the first time that the IIM-K has been given the opportunity to administer the common Admission Test. Almost 2500 candidates from across the state have appeared for the examination conducted at four centres. There has been an increase of 25% in the number of candidates at the all-India level, according to IIM-K sources. Sources said the CAT results would despatch to all IIMs after the centralised valuation. The interviews will begin in March and admission will be in July.

100,000 students to take part in ABVP march
KOZHIKODE: As part of the 48th national meet of ABVP held in Kozhikode on December 24-28, 100,000 students are expected to take part in the parliament march on November 26 in New Delhi. 20 lakh students of high educational qualifications have tendered their signatures. A proclamation letter consisting of fifty-two demands will be given to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee. The ABVP representatives will submit a memorandum of educational problems faced by the students to MPs to be discussed in the parliament. KOZHIKODE: The 48th National Conference of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) will be held in Kozhikode from December 24 to 28. About 1500 delegates are expected to take part in the conference. K N Raghunandna, national secretary said that the conference is taking place in Kerala after a long gap. The theme of the conference is ‘change education, provide employment’. As a prelude to the meet, ABVP will be organising a rally of about a lakh students in Delhi with a charter of demands with this theme.

Govt would take action against medical stores
KOZHIKODE: Health Minister P Sankaran informed that the government would soon take stringent action against those medical stores which are functioning without the service of qualified pharmacists. He was inaugurating Pharmacy Fest-2002, a get-together of members of Kerala Private Pharmacists’ Association and Kerala Pharmacy Graduates’ Association, at Nalanda auditorium in Kozhikode. Reiterating his resolve to end exploitation existing in pharmacy sector, Sankaran alleged that majority of medical shops in the state were violating laws by not appointing pharmacists. Sankaran also promised action against unauthorised institutions, which are awarding diploma in pharmacology. Meanwhile, a resolution adopted at the meeting urged the government to order an inquiry into exploitation and unhealthy trends prevailing in the health sector. The meeting also decided to launch a campaign highlighting the unethical practices in the health sector. Advocate Mathai Chacko presided over the function. Assistant Drugs Controller M P George, P Jayaraj, Anjana John, Sanil John and Dr Ramesh Adip were among those who spoke on the occasion. T Sathisan welcomed the gathering. Addl district court functions today- 9th November
VADAKARA: The functioning of the additional district court in Vadakara will begin from
today. High Court judge Justice J B Koshy will inaugurate the district court at a function to be held today at the court premises. Justice R Bhaskaran will preside over the function. This is one among the two courts in the state dealing narcotic cases. With the functioning of this court, many cases handled in sessions court would be heard here. But at present, this court does not have the facility to file cases. Advocates in Vadakara believe that this defect would be solved soon.

KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC) in association with the Calicut Airport Committee (CAC) and International Trade Fair Foundation (ITFF) will organise Chamber Expo and Trade Fair 2002, a mega exhibition-cum-sale of consumer durables, at Apsara Grounds at Arayadathupalam here from December 20 to 29. Leading business houses, merchants, institutions, government and quasi-government undertakings, industrial enterprises, public and private sector companies and multi national corporations would set up as many as 300 stalls at the exhibition venue, MCC president J A. Majeed and CAC chairman K. T. Raghunath told reporters yesterday. A hi-tech super dome parabolic structure with international touch and classy ambience would be erected for the exhibition. Malabar Mahotsavam from Jan 29-Feb 2
KOZHIKODE: The famous Malabar Mahotsavam will be held from January 29 to February 2, said an official release. A comprehensive organising committee and various sub committees were formed at a meeting presided over by district collector T O Sooraj yesterday. MLAs A Sujanapal and Binoy Viswom apart from representatives of various political parties, people’s representatives and cultural activists were present at the meeting. The festival, which includes Nrityotsavam, Sangeethotsavam, Natakotsavam, Sahityotsavam, martial arts, food festival and folk arts, will be held in seven stages.

Rangachari to visit state on Nov 9
KOZHIKODE: P M Mohammed Ali, president of the Kerala State Lorry Owners Federation said an official of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) would be in Kochi on November 9 to study the various aspects of the controversial hike in vehicle insurance premia that has been imposed in the state. Mohammed Ali had attended a meeting of representatives of insurance companies and vehicles owners called in Hyderabad recently to discuss this issue. IRDA chairman, Rangachari, had expressed surprise over the fact that the extent of increase in premia made by insurance companies in the state was higher than that in other states. The chief was also reported to have expressed his displeasure at the stand taken by insurance firms. He also stressed the need for all insurance firms to stick to the authority’s directives on tariff revision.
