Spam is defined as “Unsolicited e-mail sent to large numbers of people to promote products or services. Sexually explicit unsolicited e-mail is called “porn spam.” It also refers to inappropriate promotional or commercial postings to discussion groups or Guide boards.

Although Spam is not a big threat, Spam is the biggest nuisance in the world today. It is a threat in the sense that in some cases people are hesitating to even use Internet e-mail due the deluge of spam.

Laws fail to work: In the US, laws are in force to make spammers quit. However so far this had no impact and the junk mail that is marauding your inbox just continues. There are many remedies but none that’s perfect. Suggestions like charging for sending e-mails show how difficult solutions could become.

Domain Keys & Sender ID: These are some solutions suggested. Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft all are in work to arrive at a good solution. SPF – Sender Policy Framework is another school of thought.
