The citizens of calicut have a sigh of relief, as traffic signal lights are being installed at all busy junctions in a phased manner. Already it has been commissioned at the Mavoor Rd(I G Road)-Rajaji Rd. Jn., near the Moffusil Bus Stand. This has helped to regulate the traffic, methodically and has brought about discipline among drivers especially of Private Buses who intrude into the left lanes blocking a free left turn. Unfortunately the signals are placed on the right side at eye-level so that drivers on the left lanes are not able to pick it up in time disabling left turn at times.

The high altitude signal indicators does not serve the purpose as it can be viewed only by the vehicle in front when heavy vehicles array in the lane. Also the pedestrian crossing-enabled indicators are positioned for viewing perpendicular to the road only. General opinion is that the left turn signals are to be placed on the left side and pedestrian crossing-enabling warning light should be changed to ‘yellow icon flashing’ and then only pedestrians as well as drivers can infer it from a distance.
