A Collective move of organic olericulture by farmers (green gain) and NSS volunteers of Providence Women’s College is being proposed at Thadampattuthazham, Kozhikode. Minister for Agriculture; K.P.Mohanan will inaugurate the program on 26th December, 2011.
Students of Providence College will get hands- on experience in various aspects of organic farming in cultivation, processing, storage and marketing of vegetables (olericulture) as part of their NSS camp.
A one week camp will be conducted from December 26th to 31st; at Thadampattu uthazham, near Vengeri Regulatory Market in Kozhikode.
Experts will handle classes on various aspects of organic cultivation of vegetables.
“Eighty Five students are participating in this initiative as part of their NSS activity.
Our objective is to provide a message on the importance of organic farming. Definitely the practical knowledge helps younger generation to be well-equipped in vegetable cultivation. “-says Rose Marie, NSS, program co-coordinator of Providence College.
“Farm land was taken on lease for this practical project. Theories and practice of organic olericulture will be provided. It is important to make people aware of the merits of sustainable agriculture system”-says Prof. T .Shobeendran; coordinator of various environmental groups in Kozhikode.
Classes will be provided by technical experts from different parts of the state in sustainable agriculture.
State award winner in organic farming, K.B.R Kannan, Payyannur; noted environmental and pro-organic farming leader K.V Shiva Prasad Master are resource persons for this camp. Krishnanunni, Assistant Director of Agriculture, Thrissur will lead theoretical classes and monitor the beginning stage of cultivation.
The farmers in the group will maintain the cultivation, after the camp.
After the proposed NSS camp, short study camps are being organized for L.P; UP students. This is planned as one day training on agricultural production with the involvement of teachers.
“Our aim is to spread the benefits of organic farming in a more simple and practical manner.” says Prof. T.Shobeendran.
